Auto Racing News – After weeks of speculation Mercedes confirmed on Wednesday that Michael Schumacher a comeback to make the race for next season with fellow German Nico Rosberg team.
Schumacher, who retired at the end of 2006, has signed an agreement which will see him return to the Formula One grid at the age of 41, offers to add the record to 91 wins and seven world titles tel.
The result of a planned comeback earlier this year for Ferrari – a team that he had five drivers’ championship was won – for the injured Felipe Massa to replace. The plans were abandoned due to neck injury from a motorcycle accident.
Now fully fit, Schumacher will revive his relationship with Mercedes, a company with whom he has close ties earlier in his career had. The German car manufacturer, recently purchased the 2009 title-winning team of GP Brawn, team principal Ross Brawn maintained that once helped lead Schumacher for the title glory at Benetton and Ferrari.
“Petronas GP Mercedes is a new challenge for me in both the sporting and personal context,” said Schumacher. “This is a new chapter in my racing career and I really look forward to working with my old friend Ross Brawn and my friends from my days with the Mercedes junior program.
“I am convinced that together we will fight for the Formula One World Championship to be involved next year and I was looking forward to return to the racetrack. For me, this partnership to close the circle. Mercedes supported me for many years when I started Formula One career and now I can hopefully give something back to the brand with the star. ”
Ross Brawn commented: “I am delighted that today we can confirm that Michael a much-anticipated return to Formula One next year would create and push for our Mercedes GP Petronas team. The seven times world champion Michael’s extraordinary record in Formula One to speak to himself and I look forward to working with him again.
“With the completion of our driver line-up, I believe we are now the most exciting partnerships in Formula One with Michael and Nico, the perfect combination of talents, experience, speed and youth. We can now turn our attention to the preparation for the new season and everyone at GP Petronas Mercedes very satisfied with the challenges that lie ahead. ”
Schumacher previously indicated the relationship Mercedes, Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, added: “In April 1991, when I served in the Mercedes-Benz motorsport program for six months, he was standing beside me on the balcony one night. Without a doubt, he said in a low voice: “It is time I came into Formula One.” Michael had just turned age 22 years and four months later, he made his debut at Spa in Jordan. Mercedes-Benz helped to this point and the rest is history: the seven world championships, more than the driver, 91 Grand Prix wins, more than the managers. Michael has more of everything than any driver.
“As part of the Mercedes junior program, Michael has been performed in Group C sports car and compete in a DTM race. Ross Brawn, our opponents in the Jaguar, he has the talent quickly, and they continue to win all Eight of the drivers’ world title with the same by Benetton and Ferrari. The pursuit of our sport is always that he should be driving again, which has already started his professional career and he knows it.
